In Room 10, we’re all about problem solving, perseverance and overcoming adversity. This All-About-Me Sphere activity requires students to dig deep and draw on all of those traits while doing a fun 3-D art project!

I found this project, originally called a Personality Sphere, over 10 years ago in a magazine. The pattern given, however, wasn’t the most kid-friendly. Students had to copy their questions/answers from a sheet of choices, leaving lots of room for sluggishness and errors. The small circles were all a bit TOO small. So I gave it a nice make-over and it worked perfectly!

Cut out all 20 circles and add your own answers. Make each circle colorful, adding pictures if you’d like!

Fold each circle on the dotted lines so that the flaps point up in the air.

Choose any five circles and put them in the following shape.

Staple the sides together until it pops up into a little ‘cap’. Do this one more time so you have two ‘caps’.

Take 5 more circles and staple them to the bottom of each circle in the cap. This will make a star when on the desk, or a jelly fish if held up in the air.

Do this one more time so that you have two stars, or jelly fish. You should have used all your circles at this point.

Now fit the protruding circles from each star/jelly fish into each other and staple them together. This will create the 3-D ‘puffy’ sphere look.

Once finished, your sphere should look like this!

Hang it from the ceiling and enjoy!

I like to hang them up for Back to School Night-the kiddos are SO proud when they finally finish them, and the parents are always super impressed. You’ll find that you have fast finishers-put these kiddos to work helping students who don’t ‘get it’! Suddenly you’ve added a new dimension to the project-empathy, patience and student leadership!

Happy Back to School, all!
