Each year, I like to send my students a welcome letter before the first day. At my current school, we don’t get our official class list until about a week before the kiddos come. This means I need everything copied, assembled and ready to address ahead of time if I’m going to get them in the mail and delivered by the first day!

I love the idea of a Top Secret/Detective theme going into the school year-we really are a class of investigators and problem solvers! I finally sat down and made an entire Welcome Packet with this theme!

I started with the welcome letter. I team team with our fabulous Mrs. K for math, so she has a welcome letter in my packet as well. I lovelovelove this background template as it has a great place to stick our pictures, along with a place for our ‘favorites’ and our introduction letters.

I also made a template for the previous year’s students to give advice to your new kiddos. Because I just made this packet, I won’t get to include this super cute template this year, but I will be having my kiddos fill it out in May for next year! I do have a brochure last year’s kiddos made, so I’ll add those even though they don’t have the same theme. 😉

Ok-here’s my favorite part. What kiddo isn’t wondering how they are going to rock the year? Give them a simple checklist and a pack of Pop Rocks to help ease their worries! I grabbed packs of 3 Pop Rock packets for $1 at the Dollar Tree-incredible deal!! There’s also a cutie poem about going back to school that you can tape a little sponge animal growth capsule to. These are 15 for $1 at the Dollar Tree, and I just love the analogy of growth!

Lastly, I’m giving students their first homework assignment of 5th grade! They have to use the secret code to figure out the instructions which simply tell them to write me a letter about themselves, how they feel about school, what they do in their free time and what they did over the summer. They are asked to use the two pages of writing paper included and turn it in on their first day!

Aaaaaand if you’re like me and not rich, this prints really well in grayscale for use on the copy machine! As beautiful as the color is, I just don’t have the budget to print 29 packets on the laser printer. So copy machine, here I come! 😉

Want to use this editable welcome packet for your own classroom this year? Check it out here and start building student excitement before they even walk through the door. I’m kicking around the idea of creating a 3 day Top Secret Detective Back to School Activities packet to use with my kiddos the first week-investigating the classroom/5th grade, so stay tuned!
