Bookshelf Makeover {DIY Friday}

What do you do when one of your favorite bloggers posts an amazing bookshelf/hutch in her room reveal and you MUST have it in yours? You get creative, of course.

Melanie from Schoolgirl Style posted this AMAZING hutch in her watercolor room reveal this summer and it just brought the room up a notch. I began to scheme.

When I inherited my classroom three years ago, I was given these two brown bookshelves and very little else. They worked perfectly for my stately patriotic theme, but I thought that they might just do the trick with a coat of white paint.

I started by clearing all the books off the shelves and unscrewing the handles. I wiped down the cases (YUCK!) and had a custodian help me wheel them outside on a dolly.

12 cans of spray paint later, the shelves were mostly white. If I had it to do again, I would have just used a roller and a brush. The wind was blowing the paint everywhere and it was bubbling up in places, but I finally powered through. I also found out that the cabinets each had a light under the middle shelf that still worked, so I replaced the dusty lightbulbs and had a nice lighted bookcase!

Not too shabby for a DIY solution to must-have classroom look! The glass knobs were my final touch, and I’m completely in love with this week’s DIY project!!

Happy DIY-ing, all!
