Five years ago, I got a job at a school with only four teachers. The director gave us the keys to our rooms, which were filled with items from previous years. As we cleaned, we found treasures-pocket charts, book sets, math games. We would bring them to each other, asking ‘Can you use this? Please? Someone?’ But there were so many treasures, and so few teachers, that the director told us to just throw the items away.

My heart broke and my blood pressure skyrocketed and I knew there HAD to be a better solution. So I created Sprout Classrooms. Anytime a teacher, classroom or school in the area had more treasures than room, I was there to save them. I brought them back to our ‘warehouse’ (a three car garage below our house), sorted them, photographed them, listed them online, sent updates on them to our teacher network and then shipped them off to classrooms that needed them.

It was thrilling. My favorite moments are of renting a cargo van, driving in 100 degree heat to Sacramento while eating In and Out, dumpster diving behind schools with teachers who couldn’t stand to see the waste, and then staying up until 3am sorting through the boxes in our driveway. I loved Sprout with all my heart.

Then came the baby. Henry was born two years ago and suddenly the few hours I had in the evening after work were spent with him, not packing orders. Dumpster diving and proper pick-ups  were halted mid-pregnancy. The final nail in the coffin was when we decided to move back to my husband’s hometown for a teaching position I was offered. The logistics of moving 60,000 books and classroom items and continuing the online store was just too much, and we officially liquidated. It’s been 9 months, and I’ve had a heck of a wonderful year of teaching in my new school. But I also miss Sprout. I miss reaching out to my fellow teachers online. And I miss the creative spirit of running my own business. It is time to re-launch Sprout, albeit with a bit of a different mission.

For the time being, I’m looking forward to focusing on classroom inspiration and digital resources. I hope to curate the best of the internet’s upper elementary ideas while creating resources that fill in the gaps of what can found. I also want to help fellow mamas who are struggling to balance teaching and home life. I hope you join me as I attempt to figure out what we’re having for dinner, remember major holidays (seriously-Easter is THIS Sunday?!?) and figure out how to loose these last few pounds of baby weight. We’re all in this together, and teachers are best when they are sharing, encouraging and collaborating!

For those of you who have followed Sprout since we first started, thank you. I can’t wait to continue this journey and I hope to figure out how to jump-start our used classroom materials system in near future! For those of you who are finding us for the first time, welcome to the family. We can’t wait to get to know you!

    Hi Jem,

So you know that I am from AtoZ. I am DHE and I used to purchase things from your original store. So,is your new format is more of place to find ideas rather than selling slightly used items or will it do both?

    • katieuppman

Hey, Deidre! Right now the plan is to figure out how to get the used materials back up here, but in a more logistical-friendly manner than what I use to do. I’m going to need some time to figure that out, so you will see ideas and resources on the blog in the meantime. I’ll let you know as soon as the used materials are back! 😉

I would also be interested in knowing when the used materials are back! Also do you buy used materials?

    • katieuppman

Hey, Autumn! We’re going to start up with the used materials ASAP! I have 5 more weeks of school, and then it’s brainstorming time to figure out the logistics. I have some ideas rolling around in my head, so stay tuned!
